From Mountains to the Sea (7 to 9 Days)
The Great Axarquía Trail – GR-249 through the Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara and Alhama
The Axarquía is a land of extraordinary contrasts. The GR-249 takes you through its mountains, natural parks and iconic white villages, rich in history and local gastronomy, on a journey that unfolds between the sea and the sierra. Once you walk it, it becomes perfectly clear why so many travellers fall in love with this corner of Málaga.
The route begins in Periana, a peaceful mountain village surrounded by olive groves and open views over the La Viñuela reservoir. The trail climbs gradually into the Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara y Alhama Natural Park, where fresh mountain air, forest paths and sweeping panoramas set the tone from day one.
The first major stop is Alcaucín, a traditional whitewashed village perched on the hillside. From here, the route pushes through rugged terrain, passing through Canillas de Aceituno — home to a famous Tibetan bridge — and winding through ravines and mountain slopes before reaching a series of villages at the heart of the Axarquía: Sedella, Canillas de Albaida and Cómpeta. These are some of the most vibrant and authentic villages in the comarca, perfect for recharging among narrow streets, lively squares and local wine bodegas.
From Cómpeta, the path leads deeper into the natural park, offering wide views toward the Mediterranean. The journey continues through peaceful landscapes until you arrive in Frigiliana, widely regarded as one of the most beautiful villages in Spain, with its maze of whitewashed lanes and Moorish architecture inviting you to slow down and take it all in.
The final stretch descends toward the coast. As the mountains open up, the blue of the Mediterranean appears on the horizon, guiding you to Nerja — where you can celebrate the end of your walk with beaches, sea views and the famous Balcony of Europe.
This route blends nature, culture and coastal charm into an unforgettable journey from the mountains to the sea.
